Black Clover Season 2 returns after more than five years: what to remember

When Black Clover ended its original television run on 30 March 2021, it did not resolve the conflict consuming the Clover, Heart and Spade Kingdoms. Episode 170 stopped as Asta and his allies prepared for a rescue, leaving the anime at the beginning of its next major battle rather than the end of one.

The official continuation↗ (opens in a new tab) , branded Black Clover 2nd Season in Japan and Season 2 in English material, begins broadcasting on TV Tokyo's network and other Japanese channels in October 2026. Crunchyroll has announced that it will stream the series, although it has not published a territory list or exact simulcast schedule.

The latest official trailer↗ (opens in a new tab) identifies the new material as the Spade Kingdom Raid arc. This is not a soft restart: it returns directly to the Dark Triad, the captured Magic Knight captains and Asta's attempt to master the power introduced in Episode 170.

The official site has also released a ten-minute Season 1 recap↗ (opens in a new tab) . It is a useful reminder, but the final 13 episodes remain the better route for anyone who has forgotten why the coming rescue matters.

The foundation: Asta and Yuno's shared promise

Asta and Yuno were raised together in Hage Village and both intend to become the Wizard King. Yuno is a gifted wind mage chosen by a four-leaf grimoire who joins the Golden Dawn. Asta has no magic, but his five-leaf grimoire gives him Anti-Magic swords. He finds his place among the Black Bulls under Captain Yami Sukehiro.

Their competition never makes them enemies. Each trusts the other to keep advancing, and Season 2 resumes after both have suffered losses that challenge their routes towards the same goal.

Asta's bond with the Black Bulls matters just as much. The misfit squad becomes the group most willing to defend him when the Clover Kingdom treats his devil power as a threat. Its loyalty to Asta and Yami feeds directly into the unfinished rescue.

The conflict was larger than the Eye of the Midnight Sun

The Eye of the Midnight Sun's campaign eventually triggers the reincarnation of elves inside numerous Magic Knights. The devil Zagred had manipulated humans and elves into destroying one another, creating the despair required for him to enter the living world. Asta, Yuno and their allies ultimately defeat him.

The victory establishes that devils have their own hierarchy and plans for the human world, while leaving the Clover Kingdom weakened. Julius Novachrono survives through his Time Magic but returns in a child's body with only a fraction of his former power.

Asta then becomes a convenient target for the kingdom's leaders. His trial pushes the Black Bulls to investigate devils and curses beyond Clover, leading them towards the Heart Kingdom and eventually Spade.

How the Dark Triad changed the story

Heart Kingdom queen Lolopechka reveals that she has been cursed by the devil Megicula. Her kingdom allies with Clover, and selected Magic Knights spend six months training with its Spirit Guardians. Episodes 158-170 show that this preparation is not enough.

The Spade Kingdom is controlled by the Dark Triad: Dante, Vanica and Zenon Zogratis. Each draws power from a high-ranking devil. They intend to open the Tree of Qliphoth, allowing devils from the underworld to enter the human world.

Zenon devastates the Golden Dawn and abducts Captain William Vangeance. Yuno also learns that he is the surviving prince of the Spade Kingdom, sent away after the Zogratis siblings seized control.

Vanica attacks the Heart Kingdom and takes Lolopechka, leaving Noelle with a personal defeat and a more urgent connection to Megicula. Dante attacks the Black Bulls' base; Asta and Yami defeat him together, but Zenon arrives and escapes with Yami.

Yami's Dark Magic and William's World Tree Magic are required to activate the Qliphoth ritual. Rescuing the captains is therefore inseparable from preventing the underworld from opening.

Where Episode 170 leaves everyone

Episode 170 is structured as a set of unfinished preparations.

Asta has met Liebe, the devil within his grimoire. After winning their devil-binding ritual, he rejects domination and forms an equal contract with Liebe. Their partnership is established, but Asta has not mastered Devil Union.

Liebe is no longer an unnamed source of Anti-Magic. His memories reveal that Licita, the woman who raised him, was Asta's mother. Asta does not yet know about their shared connection to her.

Yuno is grieving the Golden Dawn's losses while processing his Spade heritage. He is preparing to defeat Zenon and rescue William.

Noelle is preparing to learn Ultimate Magic with allies from the Heart Kingdom and the elves. Lolopechka's capture makes the raid her rescue mission too.

Nacht, the Black Bulls' vice-captain and a devil host, organises the counterattack and trains Asta. Yami, William and Lolopechka remain captives while the Dark Triad's larger plan continues.

Season 2 therefore starts with damaged groups racing to become stronger before their captives can be used to open the underworld.

Is Sword of the Wizard King required viewing?

No.

Netflix describes Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King↗ (opens in a new tab) as a standalone, non-canon story whose events will not necessarily be incorporated into future seasons. The film was supervised by manga creator Yuki Tabata and uses former Wizard Kings to expand the history surrounding the office Asta and Yuno are pursuing.

That makes it relevant to the world, but not necessary for Season 2. It does not resolve the Dark Triad conflict, explain Asta's contract with Liebe or advance the rescue established in Episode 170. Anyone short on preparation time should prioritise Episodes 158-170.

Where to watch Black Clover legally in Cyprus

Netflix Cyprus↗ (opens in a new tab) carries the same run across four platform-labelled seasons: Black Clover, Black Clover II, Black Clover III and Black Clover IV. Netflix labels the finale, The Faraway Future, as Episode 171; the official anime and TV Tokyo sites identify it as Episode 170. Its Cyprus page lists Japanese and English audio with English and Japanese subtitles. Greek subtitles are not listed for the television series.

Netflix's four-season presentation should not be confused with the anime's official branding. The 2026 continuation is Season 2, not Season 5.

The shortest useful answer

Anyone who remembers the elf conflict, the Heart Kingdom and the Dark Triad can return with Episode 158. Everyone else needs to remember one central point: the original television anime did not finish Asta's war with the Spade Kingdom.

It paused after defining the losses, captives and new powers that would drive the counterattack. More than five years later, Episode 170 remains the launch point.
