# The Continuity Tax of Collecting Manga in Cyprus

A 16-volume ISBN spot check shows why completing one manga run in Cyprus can mean combining local orders with cross-border stock.

> A 16-volume ISBN spot check found no consistent missing-middle pattern in Cyprus. The obstacle was fragmented purchase routes: local supplier orders, catalogue gaps and cross-border stock that changed from series to series.

Completing one manga series can require checking local stock, waiting on supplier orders and comparing cross-border costs. / Off Model

A manga series can be easy to find in Cyprus without being easy to finish through one shop. A first volume on a shelf or in a search result says little about whether the same retailer can supply the middle and ending in the same edition.

A small, self-selected set of r/cyprus posts described that problem. One reader had reached the halfway point of [Kaguya-sama: Love Is War](<https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/comments/1853krz/where_can_i_get_manga_in_cyprus/>) but exhausted Public's selection. Others asked where to find the complete [Solo Leveling comic](<https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/comments/1nswhs5/manga_readers/>) or [The Summer Hikaru Died](<https://www.reddit.com/r/cyprus/comments/1h1yo2t/where_can_i_get_manga_in_cy/>) without relying on expensive Amazon postage.

One possible explanation is a missing middle: shops carry volume one and the newest release while neglecting everything between them. But a spot check of 16 volumes on 13 August 2026 did not show that pattern consistently. Books disappeared from the beginning, middle and end of a run, depending on the series and retailer.

The continuity tax is the planning and uncertainty created when one series requires several purchase routes. It is not a literal surcharge. Cross-border prices and delivery can add money, but the central cost is having to check exact editions, distinguish stock from supplier orders and decide whether an incomplete route is worth starting.

## How we tested it

Off Model checked 16 published English-language paperbacks across five series. We also searched for one unpublished volume and one complete box set, but kept both outside the main totals. [The full list of ISBNs, prices and retailer results is available as a CSV](<https://cdn.sanity.io/files/ujj8mcny/production/89a3d10a4ccd9d2dbc121614dafb447729bcf5b6.csv>). Exact ISBNs helped keep different editions and formats separate. No checkout or purchase was completed.

This was a stress test, not a survey of every manga shop serving Cyprus. We chose books from the beginning, middle and end or latest point of [Kaguya-sama](<https://www.viz.com/kaguya-sama-love-is-war>); the recent full-colour [Solo Leveling comic](<https://yenpress.com/series/solo-leveling-comic>); the ongoing [The Summer Hikaru Died](<https://yenpress.com/series/the-summer-hikaru-died>); the long backlist of [One Piece](<https://www.viz.com/one-piece>); and the complete 23-volume [Demon Slayer](<https://www.viz.com/demon-slayer-kimetsu-no-yaiba>).

> Stock, prices and delivery terms were checked on 13 August 2026 and can change. "Immediate stock", "supplier order", "pre-order" and "no exact result" are different findings. A missing exact-ISBN result does not prove that no copy exists elsewhere.

The table asks one simple question: could a reader currently order the exact edition? The notes distinguish books in stock from supplier orders, pre-orders and listings that could not be bought.

**Exact-ISBN purchase routes checked 13 August 2026**

| Series and checkpoints | Public Cyprus | Blackwell's | Libristo EU | SciFier |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |

## The gaps do not follow one pattern

At Public, seven of the 16 sampled books could be bought. Six depended on a supplier order, and only Demon Slayer volume 23 was immediately available. Kaguya-sama volume 1 remained listed but temporarily sold out; eight other sampled books appeared in neither an exact-ISBN search nor Public's current catalogue.

What matters is where each route breaks down. None of the three sampled Kaguya-sama books could be bought from Public, and volume 28 had no purchase route from any of the four retailers. The Summer Hikaru Died produced a local gap across all three books checked. Public could order all four Solo Leveling books, but none was immediately available. One Piece required supplier orders for volumes 56 and 111, while volume 1 did not surface. Demon Slayer reversed the expected missing-middle pattern: its ending was immediately available while the sampled beginning and middle were absent.

That does not mean every volume in those series is unavailable. It means that checking only volume one, or searching only by title, can hide the gap most likely to interrupt a collection.

## What cross-border shops fix, and what they cost

Blackwell's and Libristo could sell 15 of the 16 published books, while SciFier had exact new copies of 14. That does not make the shops interchangeable. Blackwell's marked every matched book in stock. Libristo mixed immediate or low stock with supplier waits of up to 21 days. SciFier estimated that its 14 matches would dispatch within one to five working days.

Blackwell's displayed prices included delivery to Cyprus and customs. [Libristo's delivery page](<https://www.libristo.eu/en/delivery-payment>) showed €6.49 BOX NOW delivery, while its [terms state that displayed item prices include VAT](<https://www.libristo.eu/en/terms-and-conditions>). [SciFier's policy](<https://scifier.com/shipping-and-returns-policies/>) charged €11 shipping for each Cyprus order containing up to €110 of books, applied VAT at checkout and warned that local handling or courier charges could still apply.

Goods dispatched [from within EU customs territory](<https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/buying-goods-online-coming-within-european-union_en>) do not incur customs duty on arrival in Cyprus. Goods dispatched from outside the EU may involve import VAT or carrier handling, although a seller can collect or include some of those charges before delivery. The retailer's dispatch route and final checkout total matter more than its domain name.

There is no single winner. The choice is between broad stock with delivery included in the displayed price, EU supplier stock with a separate delivery charge, and lower item prices whose VAT and possible handling still need to be confirmed at checkout.

## Why pre-orders and box sets need separate treatment

We also searched for an unpublished book: [The Summer Hikaru Died volume 8](<https://yenpress.com/titles/9798855437799-the-summer-hikaru-died-vol-8>), ISBN 9798855437799, which Yen Press dates for 27 October 2026. Public returned no exact result and SciFier returned no exact new-copy result; Blackwell's and Libristo offered pre-orders. Excluding it from the main totals stops a future release from looking like a gap in current stock.

A box set can solve continuity, but not automatically. Libristo listed the complete [Demon Slayer box set](<https://www.libristo.eu/en/search?t=9781974725953>) at €190.19 in supplier stock, with dispatch estimated at 14 to 21 days. That equals €8.27 for each of its 23 volumes before delivery, below Libristo's €9.59 to €9.79 displayed prices of the three sampled Demon Slayer singles. The saving requires a much larger upfront purchase, and SciFier returned no exact new-copy result for the set.

ISBNs also prevent a quieter mistake: buying an omnibus, regional printing or prose edition when the shelf contains matching single paperbacks. Switching editions can be sensible, but it should be a choice rather than a title-search accident.

Digital editions bridge some print gaps, but territorial rights remain fragmented. [VIZ's official FAQ](<https://www.viz.com/company-faq>) does not include Cyprus among the supported territories for Shonen Jump or VIZ Manga subscriptions. Individual ebooks can appear elsewhere, but availability remains title-specific.

## Check the commitment, not every book

1. Confirm the exact edition and ISBN before comparing stock or prices.
2. For a modest run, test the opening, a middle checkpoint and the latest or final volume, then investigate any known gaps.
3. Separate immediate stock, supplier orders, pre-orders and listings without a purchase button.
4. Compare the delivered total, including delivery, VAT, handling and any omnibus or box-set alternative.
5. Build a complete ISBN map only for an expensive or edition-sensitive commitment, then set a stopping rule: wait, change edition, buy second-hand or choose another series.

Sixteen books cannot describe the whole Cyprus manga market. They do show why a yes-or-no stock search is not enough. No retailer covered every published book in the sample, and the gaps did not settle consistently at the beginning, middle or end.

The practical lesson is to test a run before committing to it. The decisive gap may not be the famous missing middle. It may be the first book, the final paperback or the side-story volume that turns an appealing beginning into an unfinished shelf.
