Five English editions chosen to widen the shelf rather than rank obscurity. Off Model

Cyprus’s most visible manga shelf now has an established vocabulary: One Piece, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man and other anime-linked series provide obvious starting points. The next step is not to reject those books, but to make the shelf wider.

These five English editions lead in different directions: apocalyptic horror, music comedy, queer romance, domestic drama and child-friendly fantasy. The practical question is the same for each one: can a reader in Cyprus identify the correct first volume and obtain it without buying a visible sequel by mistake?

1. After God by Sumi Eno

VIZ’s description of After God (opens in a new tab) begins thirty years after gods devastated Japan and left entire cities classified as danger zones. Researcher Sachiyuki Tokinaga is looking for a way to kill them; Waka Kamikura enters restricted Tokyo searching for a missing friend and brings a dangerous secret into his investigation.

VIZ categorises the series as action-adventure, dystopian and supernatural. Its free preview is the appropriate place to decide whether the atmosphere and page design suit you; this guide does not substitute a critical verdict for that sample.

Volume 1 was released on 19 November 2024 as a 192-page VIZ Signature paperback. Nine English volumes had been released by March 2026.

Parga listed volume 1 (opens in a new tab) at €13.11 with “limited stock” and a five-to-fifteen-day window, alongside linked pages for volumes 1–5. A3 indexed volumes 1–7 at €14.99 (opens in a new tab) , although volume 7 was out of stock at the check. That makes After God the clearest locally supported starting point here, but not a guaranteed seven-volume purchase.

2. Bocchi the Rock! by Aki Hamazi

Yen Press introduces Hitori Gotoh (opens in a new tab) as a guitarist who hopes musical ability will make other people approach her. Anonymous online attention proves easier than conversation until Nijika asks her to fill a place in a band.

The publisher classifies the manga as comedy and slice of life and provides a fourteen-page preview. That sample can show prospective readers the English lettering and compact page format without this article pretending to review the series.

Volume 1 was released on 17 October 2023 as a 136-page paperback in a 5.75-by-8.25-inch trim. Seven English volumes are available; volume 8 is scheduled for 24 November 2026.

A3 indexed correctly identified Yen Press editions for volumes 2–7 at €18.99. (opens in a new tab) Its result labelled volume 1 carried unrelated publisher and ISBN information, so it should not be treated as an exact match. Request the first book directly instead of beginning with the first trustworthy local sequel.

3. The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All by Sumiko Arai

Yen Press’s synopsis (opens in a new tab) follows Aya, who develops a crush on a stylish CD-shop employee without realising that the employee is Mitsuki, her quiet female classmate. Shared music provides the connection after the initial misunderstanding.

The English edition’s black, white and bright-green presentation is visible throughout the official preview. Yen Press categorises it as romance, LGBTQ and yuri, so readers can inspect both its stated genre and distinctive physical presentation before ordering.

The first 184-page paperback was released on 22 October 2024. Three English volumes are available, with volume 4 scheduled for 27 October 2026.

A3 listed volume 2 (opens in a new tab) and volume 3 at €21.99, but no exact local volume 1 page was confirmed. The correct first paperback should be secured before either continuation.

4. Hirayasumi by Keigo Shinzo

VIZ’s official synopsis (opens in a new tab) introduces 29-year-old Hiroto, who inherits a one-storey house after an unlikely friendship with an older neighbour. His 18-year-old cousin Natsumi moves in while attending art school, bringing her own worries about work and the future.

VIZ classifies Hirayasumi as drama. That premise makes it the list’s non-action option, but the free preview should decide whether its domestic scale and pacing appeal to you.

Volume 1 was released on 21 May 2024 as a 192-page VIZ Signature paperback. Volume 9 followed in May 2026.

No exact Cyprus volume 1 listing was confirmed. Because the English edition is current and VIZ is already represented locally, this is a sensible special-order test before importing one book from outside the EU.

5. Nicola Traveling Around the Demons’ World by Asaya Miyanaga

Seven Seas describes Nicola Traveling Around the Demons’ World (opens in a new tab) as a child-friendly fantasy about a human girl travelling through a demon world with her friend Simon. The publisher invokes The Moomins and Hilda as atmospheric comparisons; that is the publisher’s positioning, not an equivalence claimed by Off Model.

The practical advantage is confirmed: the English edition is complete in four volumes. Volume 1 was released in November 2019 and the fourth and final book in November 2021.

  • Vol. 2: 978-1-64505-208-1

  • Vol. 4: 978-1-64827-911-9

No exact local product page was confirmed. Ask one bookseller to check all four ISBNs together; a complete quotation is more useful than discovering the final missing volume after buying the first three.

If Cyprus’s usual manga shelf makes the medium look dominated by anime-linked action series, these five books offer a wider starting point. Choose After God for horror, Bocchi the Rock! for comedy, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn’t a Guy at All for romance, Hirayasumi for quiet adult drama, or Nicola Traveling Around the Demons’ World for a short, complete fantasy. The ISBNs above give you a practical way to find the right first volume locally or request it by special order.
