What You Actually Need Before Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2

The new series follows a different crew. The original anime can teach you Night City’s rules, but neither it nor Cyberpunk 2077 is compulsory homework.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 sounds like a second season asking viewers to remember David’s story and perhaps finish Cyberpunk 2077 first. It is not being presented that way.

The new anime arrives on Netflix on 20 October 2026 with a different crew and a self-contained ten-episode story. The useful answer is short: you should be able to start there. Neither the first Edgerunners nor the game has been established as required preparation.

If you have ten episodes to spare, though, the original anime remains the best introduction. Not because its plot continues, but because it teaches you what kind of place Night City is. Our earlier editorial, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Made Me Care About a World I Didn’t Understand, explains how that introduction worked without any background in the game. It contains spoilers for all ten episodes.

Edgerunners 2 starts over with Weak and D

The official series page (opens in a new tab) introduces Weak, a former cyberpunk legend forced to live without chrome in a world that has moved beyond him. D is a nomad pursuing revenge who gets close to corporate secrets intended to remain hidden.

Their stories intersect with those of Roman, Talia, Avida and Sal. The announced themes are family, obsession and legacy, but the complete shape of their conflict remains under wraps. Netflix describes an all-new cast and a reimagined animation style rather than another chapter built around the original crew.

There is continuity behind the production. Kai Ikarashi, who worked on the original and directed its sixth episode, now directs the series. Kanno Ichigo serves as lead character designer, while Bartosz Sztybor and Masahiko Otsuka return to the story team.

The creators describe the format (opens in a new tab) as an anthology held together by Night City. Sztybor characterises the first story as a movement from “zero to hero” and the second as “hero to zero”. The questions around ambition, family and sacrifice may return, but the characters reach them from the opposite direction.

Watch the first anime for the city, not the plot

No returning character has been announced, and neither Netflix nor CD Projekt Red has identified an unresolved storyline that newcomers must learn. On the available evidence, there is no conventional recap list.

What the first anime provides is a ten-episode education in Night City’s rules. Corporations sit above ordinary lives. Cyberware can make a body more powerful and more valuable, but it can also turn that body into a cost someone must keep paying. Mercenary work looks like freedom until a stronger employer decides otherwise.

Knowing those rules should make the new crew easier to read. Weak living without chrome means more when you understand why augmentation carries status. D approaching corporate secrets means more when you have already seen the distance between a corporation and the people beneath it.

The game adds a map, not a missing chapter

Edgerunners 2 takes place in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but its official synopsis does not ask viewers to know V’s story, reach a particular ending or play the Phantom Liberty expansion.

The game instead turns the setting into somewhere you can inhabit. Its districts, corporations, gangs, fixers, slang and cyberware become systems and places rather than details passing behind the characters. A player may recognise a street or understand a term immediately where a new viewer learns it through context.

That can make Night City feel larger, but it does not supply a missing first chapter for Weak or D. Their anime still has to introduce their relationships, aims and conflict. Playing the game is the deepest preparation route and the least necessary one.

Choose the route that matches your interest

For the shortest route, watch Edgerunners 2 when it arrives. Its new crew and self-contained story are designed to provide the entry point.

For the route we would recommend, watch the original ten episodes first. That is enough to understand what the Edgerunners name promises and why Night City matters without turning the release into a long catch-up project.

For the city route, add Cyberpunk 2077 only if the setting itself interests you. The game rewards curiosity about the world; it is not an entrance requirement for the anime.

Edgerunners 2 still has its own crew to introduce and story to complete. Shared references may reward existing viewers, but the first anime and game serve different optional purposes: one gives Night City emotional weight; the other gives it streets you recognise. Neither appears to be the ticket required at the door.
